The burnout guide: Tips and tools to reconnect with yourself
Summer often feels like an invitation to reset. But without intention, it can easily become a season where burnout quietly deepens with every new RSVP “yes,” kiddo playdate, and added travel plan. This is especially true for those of us used to pushing through, saying yes, and carrying too much.
I’ve been there. A couple of years ago, I shared the painful but eye-opening moment when I realized I was in the throes of a burnout episode and something had to change ASAP.
More than 20,000 views and two additional articles later, I’ve shared my experience moving through burnout, finding support, and creating more sustainable rhythms in life and work.
While I’ve made great strides in my own relationship with burnout, it’s still a culturally-prevalent topic, unfortunately.
Remote work blurred boundaries. Ambitious people are realizing passion alone doesn’t prevent burnout. And we’re more open than ever about mental health, which means people are finally naming what they’re experiencing.
If that feels resonant, my hope is that you’ll find the articles and tools in this roundup to be useful, freeing, and actionable. Because burnout is about more than being tired. It’s about disconnection—from meaning, from purpose, from yourself.
The Burnout Guide:
1. A personal account of what burnout looks like
“How I Got Into and Managed to Walk Away from Burnout” is the original article I wrote back in 2023 that gained more traction than I ever could have imagined. As you read it, you'll learn how to spot signs of burnout, why it’s so easy to participate in this cycle, and how to break free.
2. Tools and resources to recover from burnout
In response to all the comments, DMs, and emails I got after writing the first article, I put together a list of suggestions and resources to help you or a loved one step out of burnout and into replenishment. Here are my resources to help you walk away from burnout. Quitting social media was a big factor for me, so here’s a separate reflection on that process if it’s calling your name.
3. A summer-specific guide for protecting your energy before depletion sets in
This is a timely, topical guide to beating burnout—or even getting ahead of it—so you can enjoy a summer of taking breaks, finding pause, and honoring the rebellious spirit required to reclaim precious time and energy!
Burnout isn’t a personal failing—it’s a signal.
By paying attention and taking proactive steps, we can protect what matters most and build a more grounded, energized way forward. And, I’ve got to tell you, the view from the other side is glorious. I hope you’ll join me.
